What should you bring when ordering wire and cable?

Bring as much of the following information as your project provides:

Copy the information exactly. Small differences in a product description can change what the product is designed and listed to do.

If the documents conflict or leave out an important requirement, send the question back to the person responsible for the electrical design. A supplier can help identify products that match provided requirements, but the supplier should not replace the project’s electrician, engineer, manufacturer, or inspector.

Include the equipment information

When the wire or cable will serve a specific piece of equipment, provide the manufacturer, complete model number, and a readable photograph of the nameplate.

Also include any wiring or connection information supplied by the manufacturer. Do not rely on a general description such as “wire for a rooftop unit” or “cable for a pump.” Similar equipment can have different electrical and environmental requirements.

For replacement work, photographs of the existing cable markings can help. Make sure the lettering is readable and include several photos if the complete marking repeats around the cable.

Identify the complete product, not only the gauge

A conductor size alone does not identify a complete wire or cable product. An order may also need to specify:

Copper or aluminum
Solid or stranded construction, when required
Single conductors or a multiconductor cable
Insulation or cable type
Jacket characteristics
Voltage rating
Wet-location, dry-location, outdoor, underground, sunlight-resistant, or other applicable markings

Whether a factory length or cut length is required
Whether multiple cuts can come from the same reel

For example, “1,000 feet total” may mean one continuous 1,000-foot reel, four 250-foot coils, or several job-specific cuts. Those are different orders.

Cut material may have special order conditions and may not be returnable. Confirm the product, measurement, and return terms before authorizing a cut.

Specify color and identification requirements

Color can matter for phase identification, circuit identification, control wiring, communication systems, or job standards. Provide the exact colors and quantities required by the project documents.

Accent lighting

Adjustable recessed fixtures can highlight artwork, shelving, fireplaces, architectural details, and displays. Check the fixture’s aiming range, beam options, and trim design rather than assuming every adjustable fixture will produce the same effect.

Wall washing

Wall-wash fixtures are designed to distribute light across a vertical surface. They are different from standard downlights and should be identified as part of the lighting plan before ordering.

The area above the ceiling can narrow the available options quickly.

Do not assume every product described as a “4-inch” or “6-inch” retrofit fits every housing in that size range.

Canless or wafer downlight

Integrated architectural downlight

4. Compare light output in lumens

Wattage describes power consumption. Lumens describe the amount of light delivered.

Two recessed fixtures with similar wattages can produce different light levels and beam patterns. When comparing products, review:

Delivered lumens
Beam angle or distribution
Center-beam intensity, when relevant
Ceiling height
Room size and surface colors
Purpose of the light
Other lighting already in the room

Products with a higher CRI may be useful where finishes, merchandise, food, artwork, skin tones, or material colors are important. Many current recessed fixtures offer 90 CRI, but CRI alone does not describe every aspect of light quality.

Review the complete product specification when color consistency matters.

7. Choose the trim and beam style

Trim affects appearance, glare, beam control, and how the fixture integrates with the ceiling.

Common options include:

Baffle trims
Reflector trims
Open trims

“Dimmable” does not mean compatible with every dimmer.

Before purchasing, record:

Whether the lights will use standard dimming, 0–10V controls, smart controls, sensors, or another system

What Does a NEMA Enclosure Rating Mean?

A NEMA enclosure type identifies the environmental protection an enclosure is designed and tested to provide when it is properly assembled and used as intended. Depending on the type, that protection may address falling dirt, rain, windblown dust, splashing water, hose-directed water, corrosion, oil, coolant, or submersion.

The current standard covering these enclosure types is ANSI/NEMA EN 10250-2024, Enclosures for Electrical Equipment.

A NEMA rating does not, by itself, identify the enclosure's dimensions, construction material, wall thickness, internal equipment, voltage rating, short-circuit rating, or suitability for a specific circuit. Those details must be confirmed separately.

Common NEMA Enclosure Types

The descriptions below are general purchasing references. Always verify the exact manufacturer documentation, project specification, listing, and markings before ordering or approving a product.

NEMA Type 1

Type 1 enclosures are generally intended for indoor locations and provide basic protection against contact with enclosed equipment and limited amounts of falling dirt.

NEMA Type 3R

Type 3R enclosures are commonly associated with indoor or outdoor locations where protection from falling rain, sleet, snow, and external ice formation is required. Type 3R should not be treated as equivalent to ratings intended for hose-directed water or corrosive exposure.

NEMA Type 4
