8. Identify the environmental requirements

Tell the supplier whether the fixture will be used in:

A dry interior room
A damp area
A shower or other wet area
A covered outdoor space
An exposed outdoor location
An insulated ceiling
A location with restricted airflow requirements
A rated ceiling assembly

IC, airtight, damp-location, wet-location, and fire-rated-assembly requirements address different conditions. One marking does not automatically satisfy the others.

For example, Lithonia lists specific recessed products for wet locations, while other models may only be suitable for dry or damp conditions. Check the exact fixture, housing, trim, and manufacturer instructions for the intended location. A qualified electrician or project professional should confirm the required ratings before ordering.

9. Confirm dimmer and control compatibility

“Dimmable” does not mean compatible with every dimmer.

Before purchasing, record:

Exact fixture or LED module model
Manufacturer’s supported dimming method
Recommended dimmer models
Minimum and maximum connected load requirements
Desired low-end dimming performance
Whether the lights will use standard dimming, 0–10V controls, smart controls, sensors, or another system

Use the manufacturer’s current compatibility list or dimming report. WAC Lighting, for example, publishes dimming information for specific recessed products alongside details such as lumens, CCT, CRI, IC rating, ceiling thickness, and cutout dimensions. Do not mix fixtures, drivers, and controls based only on connector appearance or marketing descriptions.

10. Verify the exact dimensions

Before ordering or altering a ceiling, confirm:

Fixture aperture
Manufacturer-required cutout
Outside trim diameter
Fixture depth
Driver or junction-box dimensions
Supported ceiling thickness
Required mounting frame or housing
Space needed around obstructions
Compatibility with an existing recessed housing

A fixture’s advertised nominal size may not equal its cutout dimension. Use the specification sheet for the exact manufacturer and model.

11. Plan for consistency and future replacement

For projects with multiple fixtures, record the complete manufacturer and part number. Also document:

Selected color temperature
Selected lumen setting, if adjustable
Trim style and finish
Beam angle
Dimmer or control model
Housing or frame model
Accessories used
Purchase date

This information will make it easier to match fixtures if one must be replaced later. Manufacturers update and discontinue lighting products, so retaining the original specifications matters.

Six signs that the lighting system needs attention

1. The lamp flickers or repeatedly turns off and restarts

Occasional flickering during startup may not indicate a failed ballast. Flickering that continues or a lamp that repeatedly shuts off and restarts should be investigated.

Possible causes can include an aging lamp, an incompatible replacement lamp, a power-quality problem, a deteriorating ballast, or another fixture component. The symptom alone is not enough to identify the failed part.

Document when the cycling occurs and how long the lamp operates before shutting off. This information can help a qualified professional narrow down the cause.

2. The lamp takes longer than usual to start

Metal halide lamps do not reach full output instantly. However, a noticeable change in starting behavior may indicate that the lamp or another part of the system is nearing the end of its useful life.

If a fixture that previously started reliably begins taking much longer, fails to start, or works only intermittently, arrange for an inspection. Avoid repeatedly switching the fixture on and off in an attempt to force it to start.

3. The fixture sounds different

Some magnetic ballasts produce an audible hum during normal operation. A new, louder, irregular, or rattling sound deserves attention, especially when accompanied by flickering or inconsistent output.

The sound may come from the ballast, mounting hardware, fixture housing, or another component. Identifying the source may require access to electrical components, so it should be handled by a qualified person.

4. Light output or color has noticeably changed

Metal halide lamps can lose output or change color as they age. Uneven color between otherwise similar fixtures may also point to lamps of different ages, incompatible components, or a system that is no longer operating as intended.

Changing the lamp does not always solve the underlying problem. If poor output returns quickly or affects several fixtures, have the complete lighting system evaluated.

5. Lamps are failing more frequently than expected

Repeated lamp failure should not automatically be blamed on the lamps. A mismatch between the lamp and ballast, fixture conditions, operating patterns, power issues, or aging components may contribute.

Do not select a replacement based only on lamp shape or wattage. Metal halide lamps have additional specifications, including their base, starting method, operating position, fixture requirements, and ANSI designation. Manufacturer product pages show how much these specifications can vary even among lamps with similar wattages. SATCO’s S5858 metal halide lamp specifications, for example, identify its wattage, base, start method, operating position, and enclosed-fixture requirement.

6. There is an unusual odor, discoloration, smoke, or visible damage

A burning odor, smoke, melted material, darkened components, or visible damage requires prompt attention. Turn the lighting system off using its normal controls and keep people away from the affected area.

Do not remove covers, touch internal components, or attempt to determine whether the equipment is still energized. Contact a qualified electrical professional or follow your facility’s established safety procedure.

What information should you collect before requesting a replacement?

Accurate identification can prevent wasted trips and incompatible orders. Without opening energized equipment or removing covers, collect whatever information is safely accessible:

Fixture manufacturer and model number
Lamp manufacturer and complete product number
Lamp wattage and base
Pulse-start or probe-start designation, if shown
ANSI designation shown on the lamp, ballast, or fixture label
Ballast manufacturer and catalog number
Input voltage shown on the equipment label
Clear photographs of accessible labels
Description of the problem and when it occurs
Approximate age of the lamp and ballast, if known
Indoor, outdoor, damp, wet, hot, dusty, or enclosed operating environment

Only photograph labels that can be reached without opening the fixture, entering a restricted area, or contacting electrical equipment.

Should the ballast be replaced or the fixture upgraded?

A direct replacement may make sense when the fixture is in good condition and a compatible component is still available. An older installation may justify comparing repair costs with a complete luminaire replacement or a properly evaluated LED conversion.

That decision depends on more than energy use. A contractor may also consider:

Condition and age of the existing fixtures
Availability of compatible replacement parts
Maintenance frequency
Required light output and distribution
Indoor or outdoor listing requirements
Operating environment
Controls and emergency-lighting requirements
Installation and labor costs

An LED lamp is not automatically a safe or compatible replacement for every metal halide system. Any conversion should follow the product listing, manufacturer instructions, fixture requirements, and applicable local codes.

Do not diagnose HID equipment by symptoms alone

Flickering does not automatically mean the ballast is bad, and a new lamp does not always solve the problem. Similar symptoms can have several causes.

Fundamentals

What an LED driver does. It converts input power to the voltage and current characteristics required by the LED load. Depending on the model, a driver may also provide dimming interfaces and protective functions such as over-temperature or short-circuit protection. Do not assume every driver provides the same protective or control features.

Constant-current (CC): the driver sets a fixed output current, for example 350 mA, 700 mA, or 1050 mA. The voltage floats within a rated window to satisfy the LED load.
Constant-voltage (CV): the driver fixes output voltage, commonly 12 or 24 V. The connected LED module or light engine must be designed for that fixed voltage and provide the required current regulation or limiting. This approach is common with many tape-light, sign, and modular LED systems.
Programmable drivers: field-adjustable via NFC or a lead set. One SKU can cover multiple currents and dim floors. The settings need to be recorded on the fixture or in the panel directory.
Multi-output drivers: some drivers provide multiple output channels for applications such as tunable white or RGBW. Channel isolation, current limits, and control behavior are model-specific and must be confirmed in the datasheet.
Controls-ready drivers: 0–10 V, DALI-2, phase-cut, or wireless radios like BLE mesh and Zigbee. The protocol needs to be locked in early so fixtures, sensors, and relays play nicely together.

Driver vs. power supply. LED systems may use either a constant-current driver or a constant-voltage supply together with LED modules that provide their own current regulation or limiting. A constant-current LED load should not be connected to an arbitrary fixed-voltage supply unless the LED or fixture manufacturer specifically identifies that combination as suitable.

Ripple and flicker. The rectifier and storage stage matter. High ripple can show up as visible flicker or a stroboscopic effect. Premium drivers publish low ripple percentages and total harmonic distortion figures. Low-ripple drivers matter most in classrooms, retail, and any area with moving machinery.

A driver-heavy lighting job runs through several parts of the NEC that your electrician and engineer will coordinate:

NEC 110.3(B): install per the listing and the manufacturer's instructions
NEC Article 725: Class 2 and Class 3 circuits are generally subject to separation requirements from electric-light, power, and Class 1 circuits, but NEC 725.136 includes permitted arrangements and exceptions that must be evaluated for the actual installation
NEC Article 411: certain low-voltage lighting systems, 30 V and under, have their own listing and use requirements
NEC 410.71: disconnecting means for luminaires with replaceable double-ended lamps or retrofit kits
NEC 700.11: contains requirements for Class 2-powered emergency lighting systems, including identification, circuit separation, and wiring protection provisions. These requirements apply only when the control or lighting system falls within the emergency-system provisions
Power-limited wiring: cable type, routing, plenum suitability, and circuit-classification requirements depend on the specific driver output, control system, and installation. Use the applicable NEC wiring rules and the product listing rather than assuming all low-voltage LED wiring is handled the same way

Confirm the code and project requirements that apply to the actual installation before finalizing a specification. New York's Uniform Code is adopted at the state level outside New York City and enforced locally; approved more-restrictive local standards may also apply in limited cases.

What determines CC vs. CV, and what your engineer needs

Choosing between constant-current and constant-voltage isn't a coin flip, it comes down to the load:

LED topology: COB, mid-power board, or tape all behave differently. The module datasheet gives forward voltage (Vf) at operating temperature and rated drive current (If).
CC is common for LED boards, COBs, and many integral luminaires. CV is common where the LED module is specifically designed for a fixed-voltage source, such as many tape-light and sign systems. The LED-module or fixture documentation determines which architecture is required.
Output window: for CC, the voltage range needs to cover the LED's Vf across temperature, including the higher Vf typical of a cold start. For CV, the driver's wattage and current limit need to cover the worst-case load without browning out.
Control protocol: lock this in during design, not after. 0–10 V is common and simple; line-voltage phase-dimming drivers exist but need to be checked against the specific dimmer family; DALI-2 and wireless protocols need compatible fixtures and gateways from day one.
Environmental ratings: minimum and maximum ambient temperature, the case temperature limit at the Tc point, and ingress protection all matter, especially in coastal, washdown, or plenum spaces.
Inrush: driver inrush current and duration affect how many fixtures can safely share a breaker. That's a calculation your electrician runs against the actual driver datasheet and breaker curve, not something to eyeball on a large bank of fixtures.
Documented settings: for programmable drivers, record the programmed output current, dimming parameters, and other relevant settings in the location required by the fixture manufacturer, project documentation, or facility maintenance standard.

Pull the LED module's datasheet and the driver candidates' datasheets before you spec anything. That's the actual homework; the sizing math itself belongs to whoever is engineering the circuit.

What your electrician handles during installation

Terminal torque to the manufacturer's spec, since a loose connection is a hot joint waiting to happen
Applying the required wiring method and separation rules for the actual Class 2, Class 3, Class 1, or other circuits involved, including the permitted arrangements and exceptions in NEC 725.136 where applicable
Following the driver's listed mounting, spacing, ambient-temperature, case-temperature, and insulation-contact requirements. Remote mounting is appropriate only when permitted by the driver, luminaire, and project documentation
Following the manufacturer's grounding and bonding instructions for the driver and luminaire. Do not infer field-bonding requirements from the presence of a metal case alone
Using drivers, luminaires, enclosures, and connections identified for the actual dry, damp, wet, corrosive, or other environmental conditions. An IP number by itself should not be treated as a universal substitute for the required listing or location rating
Evaluating surge-protection requirements from the luminaire and driver manufacturer's instructions, project specifications, applicable code requirements, and site exposure rather than assuming every installation requires the same panel-level and luminaire-level arrangement

What to ask for in documentation

Confirmation of correct polarity and dimming behavior across the full range, with no flicker or dropout at minimum dim
A ripple/flicker check for sensitive spaces like classrooms, labs, or production floors
A written record of any programmed driver settings, output current, dim floor, and timing, kept with the fixture or the panel directory
Commissioning notes for any networked controls
If a utility or incentive program is involved, keep the product documentation and measurements specifically required by that program rather than assuming every rebate uses the same submittal package

Warning signs worth a call

Fast flicker, especially in the 100–120 Hz range
Random shimmer when dimming
Breakers tripping at energization across a bank of fixtures
A driver that shuts down after 10–20 minutes of operation
One channel dead on a tunable-white or RGBW fixture

These symptoms can have several possible causes, including dimming incompatibility, transient or inrush issues, excessive temperature, wiring problems, or component failure. Diagnosis should be performed by a qualified person using the manufacturer's procedures and applicable electrical-safety requirements. Equipment should be de-energized before work whenever required; energized diagnostic testing should be limited to situations where it is justified and performed under the required safe-work practices.

Common mistakes to avoid

Mixing CC and CV loads on a single output
Ignoring cold-start Vf and choosing too narrow a voltage window
Underestimating inrush across a large bank of fixtures
Running CV drivers near full rated load on long tape runs

How do I tell CC vs. CV quickly?
CC lists output current as a range in amps or milliamps with a voltage window. CV lists a fixed output voltage, like 12 or 24 V, and a maximum current or wattage.

Do I need a separate SPD?
Not automatically. Surge-protection requirements depend on the luminaire and driver design, manufacturer instructions, project specifications, applicable code requirements, and site exposure. Where additional protection is specified, use devices and arrangements identified for the actual system.

What minimum dim level should I expect?
There is no universal minimum. The specified dimming range, dim-to-off behavior, low-end trim, and compatibility depend on the exact driver and control combination. Use the manufacturer's performance data and compatibility information.

Why did the driver fail early?
Excessive temperature can reduce electronic-component life, but an early failure can also involve unsuitable output settings, transient exposure, control incompatibility, wiring problems, or component defects. Do not substitute a higher-rated or "oversized" driver as a generic fix. The replacement must match the LED load, output current or voltage requirements, operating window, control method, environmental limits, and manufacturer-approved application.

Can I reuse existing control wiring?
Only after confirming the existing cable type, insulation, circuit classification, routing, separation, condition, and the control manufacturer's requirements. Existing 0–10 V wiring should not be assumed reusable solely because the new driver also has 0–10 V leads.

Is phase-cut dimming okay with LEDs?
It can be when the exact LED driver or luminaire is designed and documented for the applicable phase-control method and control device. Verify the manufacturer's compatibility information rather than assuming one dimming protocol will perform better in every application.

Adding occupancy sensing, time scheduling, or daylight dimming increases savings further.

Many one-for-one LED retrofits land in a wide range of energy savings before controls. Your actual number depends on the baseline fixtures, hours of use, and what controls get added. Treat any percentage as a starting estimate, not a promise.

Controls, rebates, and listings

Utility rebate programs typically require products qualified on the DesignLights Consortium (DLC) Qualified Products List, for both luminaires and networked lighting controls. PSEG Long Island runs a commercial efficiency program that covers lighting upgrades, but program details, deadlines, and incentive amounts change from year to year. Check PSEG Long Island's current commercial rebate page before you plan around a specific incentive amount or deadline.

Beyond rebates, listings matter too. Most luminaires need to carry a UL 1598 listing. LED equipment used in lighting products falls under UL 8750. Anything tied to emergency lighting or exit signs needs a UL 924 listing. Your electrician or supplier confirms the specific listing each product needs.

Light quality, color, and dark-sky considerations

Most commercial LEDs deliver good color rendering with consistent color temperature across a run of fixtures. The right optics, color temperature, and shielding cut glare. For outdoor fixtures, DLC's LUNA-qualified products are built to limit uplight and light trespass, which helps meet dark-sky ordinances where they apply. If a project also involves dimming or video capture, ask your supplier about drivers built for smooth, low-flicker dimming, since not every driver and dimmer pair works well together.

What to gather before you request a quote

Decide the space type and form factor you are after: panels or troffers for offices and schools, high-bay fixtures for warehouses, full-cutoff area lights for parking lots.

Where code comes into the picture

Certain LED and fluorescent retrofits trigger additional code requirements. Some luminaire types need a disconnecting means added when a ballast or driver gets serviced. Lighting load recalculations can apply when a retrofit meaningfully reduces connected load. Low-voltage or PoE lighting has its own conductor and separation rules. None of these are something to work out from a blog post. Your electrician or engineer of record confirms which requirements apply to your specific retrofit, fixture types, and jurisdiction.

Emergency and egress lighting

Where a retrofit touches exit signs or egress lighting, the equipment needs to carry a UL 924 listing and meet National Electrical Code Article 700 and NFPA 101 performance requirements. Emergency lighting also needs regular functional testing to stay compliant. Design, installation, wiring, and testing of emergency lighting equipment is licensed-electrician work.
